Living in Ireland
In April 11, 2008, My husband and I with our King Charles Spaniel dog Angus were on our way to our "new" life which was Ireland. We knew this country from our holidays. In fact, I know and visited more places in this country than I do know about the Philippines. Sad to say, but it`s the truth. Since Ireland is in Europe and far more cheaper than flying to my home town, so we often travel with our car from Germany-Rotterdam (Netherlands)-England- Ireland. From Rotterdam with an overnight ferry to Dover, England. Then hours of driving across England to the port in Wales, Holyhead. We usually stayed overnight in a Bed and Breakfast hotel near the port. It depends on what time of the day we arrived in Holyhead or how tired we are that we had to rest for a while before starting our final journey. Having a rest is good for us to recover the strength that we need. The next day, we continue our travel with an irish ferry for about 3 hours to port of Dublin. Angus is of course inside our car, in the garage of the ferry.
We arrived in Dublin Port on the 13th of April. But still, we had to be on the road for 4 to 5 hours until reaching our destination which was our holiday home in Geesala, Co. Mayo. We were 3 days on the road, fresh from our overnight sleep in Holyhead and happy to welcome our new life in another country, with the irish people, irish weather but most of all with an irish environment which has hundreds of different green colors. Amazing Landscape!!! Only God knows how HE created this kind of beauty. If there would be heaven...It should be like the Atlantic Drive in Achill Island...
Our holiday home in Geesala, which we rented for 6 weeks until we could find the appropriate house near my future work place was very cute. It was good for 2 persons with a dog. It has a very cosy kitchen and a living room with an open fire place. Upstairs were the 2 twin beds were very near to the roof that we had to be careful not to hit our head by getting up. There were 2 cupboards where we stored our things and the most important thing for me was the bathroom. The surroundings was quiet that I could hear the chirpping of the birds, the air fresh as it should be and the view was great that I spent much time walking with angus. Angus enjoyed his life there as well.
We were not yet 1 week in Geesala that our landlady told us that there´s a spa in Belmullet where I could apply for a job. I applied for the job as a massage therapist and was accepted as a part time jobber. I started my new job on the 19th of that month. Actually, I was planning to rest for a month for I was still exhausted from my last work in Germany. But then, why not? Why waste the chance that might never come back again?
So, I started working on that Saturday. It was a day full of surprises. My workmates welcomed me in joining their team. I was instructed what to do and don´ts in our job. I learned a lot on that day. Massaging the clients, listening to them speaking in irish english, talking to them and letting them understand my english with my own accent. My head was bursting on that day. When my husband collected me at 6 pm, my face was shining with joy. Then suddenly, somebody knock on our window car and said "Thelma, you forgot your wages. See you next week". Then my workmate left us. We started driving "home" laughing.
We were laughing for it had never happened before in my life that somebody ran after me just to give me my wages. In Germany, it was always me who kept on running after my wages until I got sick and quit the job.

Ireland does look beautiful. I would love to go there but so far I've been chasing the sun.
Very interesting hub from my viewpoint I lived in Mayo for many years. My two daughters still live there so I visit it as often as I can. They are quite near Achill too. Your photos are lovely and it didn't rain, which is surprising!!

Wonderful photos! Beautiful country side in Ireland! Strange how I've come across this hub that is about a subject my wife and I are considering! Like to suggest that this hub is important, I'd like to see the text and photos integrated together. Lead with a short text capsule, then a photo, etc. Again, great article, just present text sooner!
