LAKE DISTRICT VACATION, ENGLAND

On our way to Lake District
A few years ago, my husband and I went to have a vacation with my sister and her husband to England. We started our travel with DFDS Seaways cruise ferry from Port of Ijmuiden in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, crossing the North Sea to Newcastle Port, England. We had an overnight cabin as we travelled by night time. We enjoyed our stay inside the ferry as it has a lot of amusement centers, restaurants, cinemas, pubs and we were enjoying the amazing view of the sea while the night was not dark, yet. Our cabin was not so bad for four persons with a bath room and we were excited for our coming adventure at Lake District.
The next day, after our English breakfast which consists of bacon, toast, fried eggs, baked beans, roasted tomatoes, teas ,coffees and juices, we prepared ourselves for our arrival in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. We went inside our car waiting for our signal to go out of the ferry and then to the English road which means driving on the left side of the road. It was my brother-in-law´s car, but my husband was driving most of the time. Driving on the left side of the road was so scary for we were not used to it especially that I sat on the side where other vehicles passed by. However, my husband loved driving on the left and had driven many times on English roads so we felt secure.
Our destination was a Bed and Breakfast Hotel in Cockermouth which is near the Lake District. The hotel was our base for our one week vacation for exploring the Lake District.

Sightseeing In:
Hadrian Wall
Hadrian Wall was on our way to Cockermouth so we made a stop for an hour or two to see the remnants of it. Hadrian Wall was built around 2000 years ago by Emperor Hadrians´ order who was the emperor in Britain at the times of the Roman Empire. It was built as a border to have control of the flow of population and as what I have heard, to keep the Scotsman away from the English people.
Cockermouth
Cockermouth is known as an old market town since 1221 and it is outside the boundary of Lake District. This town became popular because of the two men who were born in this town. William Wordsworth, a poet and a writer and the man who had led the mutiny on "The Bounty" Fletcher Christian. William Wordsworth popular poem was "The Daffodils".
Our stay in Cockermouth was a memorable one. There were lots of shops to stroll around, from antiques to modern ones, different restaurants, many beautiful churches, lakes, mountains and a fascinating castle and a park nearby.
Lake Windermere
The largest lake in England is lake Windermere. Lake Windermere is such a lovely place to visit. It was a sunny day when we were there and we had enjoyed our cruise tour on the lake of Windermere. Sitting on the benches of the boat was relaxing. Breathing the fresh air, observing the birds flying above us, the swans swimming on the lake and taking in the beauty of the nature around the lake while the other tourists were enjoying their boating and fishing activity.
This vacation of ours has taken place in the year 2003. It is eight years ago. I am sure there are a lot of improvements now and I hope it is still the same beauty as I once saw it. I hope you enjoyed reading this article and feel free to give an honest comment. Thank you for reading.

What a beautiful hub and super pictures. Brings back memories. I love the Lake District. I spent a month, (or was it two) as Artist in Residence at Grizedale forest and it was truly magical. I have lots of paintings from this period to remind me of my stay, and now run painting holidays, a holiday home and bed and breakfast in Limousin, known as "The Lake District of France". Really.
